Swansea became a city in 1969 and since that time the industry in the area has become far more diversified. The Faculty of Science & Engineering at Swansea University is nationally and globally recognised as a centre of excellence and collaborates closely with many industrial sectors in the area.
The Materials Science Department is working with leading companies such as Airbus, Rolls Royce, GKN, Aston Martin and BASF. New coated metal products developed within the research centre are now being used by Tata Steel, General Electric and Tokyo Electric Power

Swansea: The Industrial Revolution's Cradle and Global Hub for Tinplate and Copper Production
Swansea has been described as one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. During the 19th Century it was the world centre for tinplate production and smelted over 90% of the world’s copper. The town witnessed the creation of the now much sought after Swansea Porcelain.
Swansea’s status was achieved by development of its natural resources using both local knowledge and by acting as a magnet to entrepreneurs from outside who recognized its potential. The port of Swansea also boomed during the 19th Century and was helped by the development of the Swansea Canal which made the transport of heavy raw materials to and from the port much easier. There was also a considerable shipbuilding industry but was less important than the metalworking trades.
